What is Curanderismo?

Curanderismo—from curar, “to heal”—is an umbrella term for diverse traditional healing practices associated especially with Mexico and Mexican American communities. Related forms of folk healing exist throughout Latin America; it is not a single standardized religion, medical system, or ritual tradition. Rather, it developed through centuries of cultural exchange and survival, drawing in different proportions from Indigenous knowledge, local plant medicine, Iberian and Catholic devotional traditions, family practice, and other regional influences. Many curanderismo traditions understand well-being holistically, viewing the physical, emotional, spiritual, social, and natural dimensions of life as interconnected. Health may therefore be approached as a condition of balance—not only within the individual, but also in relation to family, community, nature, and the sacred. Plants, elements, prayer, ritual, touch, and other aspects of the natural and spiritual worlds may all participate in restoring or maintaining that balance. Depending on the community and practitioner, curanderismo may involve herbal remedies, bodywork, prayer, plática, limpias, dream interpretation, ritual, or forms of spiritual and symbolic discernment. Some practitioners specialize as herbalists, sobadores, hueseros, parteras, or espiritualistas, while others work across several areas. My own practice is primarily espiritualista: I focus on prayer, spiritual discernment, symbolic interpretation, divination, and ritual rather than attempting to represent every branch of the tradition. I understand curanderismo as a living and adaptive tradition whose meanings differ across families, regions, and histories. This page therefore introduces the tradition through the particular context in which I have inherited, studied, and practiced it.

What to Expect

Every consultation follows a recognizable structure, but no two sessions are the same. Before your appointment, I send brief guidance for dream or general journaling and intention-setting. I usually ask for very little background beyond what you initially choose to share; this helps me enter the reading with fewer assumptions and allows the session to unfold from its own symbols, patterns, and questions. When we meet, I begin with a short orientation so you understand the process and have an opportunity to ask questions. We then open sacred space, move into the reading, and close with whatever practice seems appropriate to the consultation. Depending on the individual and the direction of the session, I may work with tarot, pendulum, mirrors, prayer, dreams, symbolic interpretation, or other forms of divination and discernment. A limpia, blessing, prayer, or other traditional practice may follow. These are not performed by formula: each person arrives with a different history, concern, spiritual framework, and level of comfort. Throughout the session, I explain what I am doing, what a symbol or practice means within my approach, and why I am using it.

Opening Sacred Space

Opening sacred space marks the transition from ordinary conversation into intentional spiritual work. Through prayer, breath, candle, copal, or another simple ritual, I establish focus and reverence for the session. The form varies, and I explain what I am doing before we begin.

Reading

A reading is an interpretive process rather than a prediction of fixed outcomes. I look for recurring symbols, relationships, tensions, and patterns that emerge around the intention brought into the consultation. The purpose is to develop perspective and discernment—not to replace personal judgment or determine an unavoidable future.

Closing Practice

A session may close with a limpia, blessing, prayer, reflection, or another practice that feels appropriate. This stage helps integrate the reading, establish closure, and provide a spiritual or practical point of departure. Not every consultation calls for the same closing ritual.

Who am I?

I was born and raised in Cuautla, Morelos, in a family where curanderismo, folk medicine, Catholic devotion, prayer, and spiritual healing were not sharply separated from one another. That syncretic environment shaped my earliest understanding of healing through family practice, everyday remedies, ritual, stories, faith, and the Indigenous and mestizo cultural worlds of central Mexico. Like many families in the region, however, our ancestry cannot be reconstructed neatly. Colonialism, social pressure to assimilate, stigma and shame surrounding Indigenous identity, migration, and the upheavals that shaped Morelos—including the Mexican Revolution—make parts of that history difficult to document with certainty. I therefore do not claim a specific Indigenous nation or lineage that I cannot substantiate. I understand my background as mestizo and have also used the term coyote mestizo, an older mixed-ancestry designation whose meaning varied within colonial caste systems. In college, I began examining the world I grew up in through theology, philosophy, Latin American and Indigenous studies, colonial history, social justice, tourism critique, and related interdisciplinary work. Today I bring lived tradition and academic inquiry into conversation. Curanderismo is not something I reserve for consultations; it remains part of how I pray, reflect, interpret experience, and live my everyday spiritual life.

"Christopher has a warm, gentle, genuine, and clear presence that he brings to his Curanderismo practice. His sincerity and earnestness shine through in the way that he approaches the work, and his inquisitive and open nature allows for meaningful connections to be made through liminal spaces. I appreciate the way that he avoids projection, and offers interpretations with a spirit of curiosity towards making meaningful connections for the client. Not heavy-handed at all. Which can be rare when dealing with interpretation of divinatory oracles."

"It’s definitely very sprititual and connected to Mexican culture, so there are cleansing and offerings at the beginning and it will probably be very accurate on certain things, but some things you’ll have to think a little deeper into to apply to your own life"
